Top 5 Signs You’re Ready For The Magic In The Hat

The earliest definition of the Red Hat Society was "a play group for women." We have evolved into a great deal more than this, but we are still, at heart, a play group for women. We talk a lot about the value of play, and we believe that play time is necessary for people of all ages. We don't just talk about it – we get out and find the fun where we can. If necessary, we make our own!
When is the last time you took some time for yourself? When is the last time you threw caution to the wind and tried something new or dressed up? Here are 5 signs that you are need the Magic in the Hat that can only be discovered in the Red Hat Society:

1.       You’re always taking care of others
Women are natural caregivers. Sometimes we get so invested in other people that we neglect ourselves. It’s okay to go out and enjoy some of the activities that interest you. In fact, taking that bit of time for yourself will better equip you to help others in the long run.
2.       You feel as creative as a doorknob, only less shiny
Have you become so accustomed to a day-to-day schedule that your sewing machine, craft items and painting materials have begun to collect dust? Then the RHS is just the escape you need to fuel your creativity.
3.       You need some quality girl time
Women understand each other on so many levels. The Red Hat Society has connected women with friends and Sisters who have become a support system and a welcome escape for them.
4.       You need to rediscover your true self
Taking time for yourself is not only good for your mental and emotional health, but it helps us reconnect with the little things in life that bring us so much joy. Whether you like dressing up, dancing with girlfriends, or curling up with a good book, we encourage you to do these things.
5.       You’ve Lost Your Sense of Humor
Humor is essential to Red Hatting as air is to breathing. As little girls we found excuses to laugh all the time. As we’ve grown older, we’ve begun to think and analyze too much. If your frown lines are deeper than your laugh lines, it’s time for a little shot of RHS!

If any of these signs resonate with you, then it’s time that you did something about it! Visit us at www.RedHatSociety.com or join today by calling 866-386-2850. Join the fun! There’s only one Red Hat Society!

May Photo Roundup

We have another photo roundup for you! Each month Hatters share hundreds of stories and photos with Hatquarters, and we wish we had enough publications to be able to share every memory with the world. Since we can't do that, we created the monthly photo roundup to highlight the photos that were submitted in the previous weeks. We just can't let our Members' beautiful smiles and creativity go unseen. We hope you enjoy!

Queen Be's 15 Minutes of Fame

One of the unique aspects of being a Hatter is that Members are often sought out for photos and interviews by the local media because they standout anywhere they go in their beautiful regalia. This week, RHS Ambassador and Queen Be, BJ Young, of the Bizy Be's of Delaware Chapter shared this interview she did with a local show called "Catch It Live" about the happenings in the Red Hat Society.

We loved this interview and wanted to share it here with you, because Queen Be addresses many of the questions we often receive at the Red Hat Society about what we do and how women can become involved. Plus, sometimes it's just nice just to hear it straight from the women wearing the hats! If you have ever been curious about the Sisterhood and want to know more about upcoming events, this is the perfect video for you to watch. Take it away Queen Be:

Dorothy's 15 Minutes of Fame

What a year it has been for Queen Mother Dorothy of the Ruby Crowns and Amethyst Gowns Chapter (Ontario, Canada)! Not only was she the winner of last year's Invite A Friend Contest from the Red Hat Society, but just this past month, she was honored with an "Education, Training and Mentoring Women of Excellence Award" from the Soroptimist International of Haldimand-Norfolk.

RHS Ambassador and Queen of Bits and Bytes, Jan submitted these wonderful pictures highlighting the event as well as her nomination letter. In it Jan wrote:
"Dorothy has dedicated her life to helping people. As an Ambassador for the Red Hat Society and Queen of The Ruby Crowns and Amethyst Gowns Chapter, she has helped so many women and has inspired us for years .  She brings these women together several times per month to enjoy a lunch, a tea, a show, shopping, or enjoying the fellowship of women from all over the province and the U.S. who come to visit.

She has demonstrated leadership, maturity, perseverance, innovation, compassion and a keen understanding of  her community.  The ripple effect of her many acts of kindness and countless hours of volunteering with so many organizations will continue to have a positive effect in her community for many years to come."

Congratulations Queen Dorothy, and thank you for helping to give Dorothy her moment in the spotlight, Queen Jan!

Tea Hat Inspiration

The Southern HospitaliTEA International Convention may be over, but Hatters have return from Atlanta more inspired than ever before to try new things and get creative with their hats.

A few weeks ago, we created a post showing how you can make your own Plaited Straw Cup and Saucer Hat, and  after so many tea cup and saucer hats appeared at the convention, we had to put a bedazzled twist on this festive headpiece.

This hat is super easy and fun to make! Want to give it a try? Read on:

What you'll need:
-A plastic tea set
-A sturdy circle base of wood or plastic
-Paint (colors of your choice)
- Spray glue glitter (We used purple glitter and pink glitter)
- Hot Glue
- Thick, sturdy plastic headband

How to assemble:
1. We sprayed the base with purple glitter until it was completely covered and let it sit overnight to dry
2. Paint your tea set your desired color and spray it with glue glitter. Let it sit overnight.
3. Once the tea set has dried you can glue it to the base with the hot glue gun and allow it to dry.
4. Attach the base to the headband with the hot glue gun wherever you would like. We preferred to glue it off to the side.
5. Allow plenty of time for it to completely dry before wearing it.

We hope you enjoy this hat! But before we let you go, we have to show you this incredible grits hat that one Hatter created for the Glitz & Gritz event of the convention:

Isn't that too cute? We love the creativity in this Sisterhood!

Sister To The Rescue

When it comes to the Red Hat Society, the bond of Sisterhood goes much deeper than you might think. Every week, we at the Hatquarters of the RHS receive a plethora of stories highlighting the acts of kindness experienced daily, and we share them in our communications with the Sisterhood. Since the theme for the month of May is focused on Kindness, we wanted to share this story we received last week that just made our hearts glow.

On Sunday, April 28th, Queen Mother Pat of the Paradise Mind Hatters and Queen Mum Joan of the Red Flair Ladies were making their way back to Florida from the 2013 Southern HospitaliTEA International Convention in Atlanta, Georgia. While on the road, two men drove up next to Queen Pat's driver's side and pointed out that she was driving on a flat tire. Queen Pat pulled over immediately and contacted AAA for roadside assistance. AAA was able to put her donut spare on her car and instructed her to drive to the closest BP station in Alachua County, Florida.

When the ladies arrived at the BP station, the mechanic was just finishing up another vehicle. He informed Queen Pat that he did not have her size tires, and checked with the closest Pep Boys in Gainesville to see if they could help. The Pep Boys had her tires, but their mechanics were booked solid through the end of the day. It seemed like it was just one issue after another for Pat and Joan who were stranded at the station.

As the ladies waited for the mechanic to help resolve the issue, Joan struck up a conversation with a woman in the BP store who was on her way to Panama City with her husband. It just so happened that this woman was a Red Hatter, and after hearing their story, she knew she could not leave her Sisters in their time of need. Instead, she and her husband offered to give the ladies a ride to the Pep Boys to pick up the necessary parts, and they brought them back to the BP station to complete the repair.

"This wonderful Red Hatter was from Spain and lived in the US for 30 years. She had two doctorate degrees and wanted to get another in ministry. She and her husband have a home in Miami and Panama, and she was or had been a principal in Miami. We took a chance getting into a car with strangers, and by the way her name is 'Angel'," Queen Pat said.

Thank you for taking the time to share this story with us Queen Pat, and thank you Angel for showing the true meaning of Sisterhood! How can you share a bit of kindness with someone today? Remember:
