Hatters Spread Cheer At The Happiest Place On Earth

The runners in the 2013 Tinker Bell Half Marathon got an extra dose of Scarlet Sparkles as they rounded the corner of the Mile 6 marker in Downtown Disney and discovered a sea of Red and Pink Hatters enthusiastically cheering them along their 13.1 mile trek this past January. Nearly 300 Hatters had made their way to Anaheim, California in the wee hours of the morning to celebrate fun, friendship, freedom, fulfillment and fitness with their RHS Sisters, all while sharing a bit of the Magic in the Hat with all of the Run Disney race participants.
The Red Hat Society was personally invited by runDisney® to participate in cheering on the runners of the inaugural Tinker Bell Half Marathon in 2012, and in return for their participation, each Member received a free park hopper ticket to use any time within the year. 200 Hatters turned out for that first event, and runDisney received so much positive feedback from the runners, that they asked the Red Hat Society to reserve the 2013 date. This year, more than 300 Hatters signed up for this event as soon as registration opened and several Hatters booked and shared rooms in the surrounding hotels and made a weekend of it with their Chapterettes!

Despite the early call time of 4:00 a.m. for all race and cheer participants, the energy at the Mile 6 marker was electric from the moment the first runner passed by at 5:30 a.m. until the moment the final participants passed by at 7:30 a.m. Hatters made signs, waved pom poms, hooted, hollered, and high-fived many of the race participants, and the runners were so moved by their participation that they returned the favor by cheering back at the Hatters. Some even stopped to take pictures with the group!

After the event, many runners ventured over to the Red Hat Society’s Facebook Page to share several thankful messages. Here are a few:

“The Red Hat Ladies were awesome out there today. Your cheering section was amazing! You made my list of memorable moments at Tinker Bell today.” – Marsha

“Thank you so much! You young ladies made my morning… God bless you all!!!” – Castor

“Thank you for cheering! Every time I am in Brea visiting my in-laws we see The Red Hat Society out and about. I always say – I want to be part of that!”- Barbara

“Thank you for coming out again this year! I was hoping you gals would be there. Hope you guys make yourselves a staple there each year.” – Steve
