Hatters Celebrate the Chinese New Year

Last week we received two stories of Chapters who celebrated the Chinese New Year in their respective cities, and the pictures were so cute that we had to share them with you.

The first day of the Chinese New Year was January 23, and the Blazing Hoku's Star Chapter (Hawaii, United States) held a fun outing, which included Dim Sum, games and prizes. RHS Member, Zen, submitted the story to Hatquarters and added, "The Red Hat Society does mean friendship and fun!" That's wonderful Zen! Thank you for submitting this great photo.

While the Blazing Hoku's were celebrating in the Hawaiian Islands, the Wild Wacky Women of Texas (Texas United States) were celebrating on the Mainland at a "Year of the Dragon" festival. "We enjoyed Asian art and music, made paper lanterns and fed red envelopes to the dancing lions during the Glow-in-the-dark Dragon and Lion parade," shared Penny, the Queen of Good Times. "Exploring the foods of the festival was also part of the fun." The ladies were photographed more than once that evening, and they were applauded for their Red Hats and festive spirit. "Red Hatters easily stand out regardless of the size of the crowd or the kind of the occasion," Penny said. Look at these wonderful photos! Thank you for sharing Penny!

Hatquarters Happenings

We are so excited that Hatters are embracing the year of the "Star Among Us." We have received so many wonderful "I'm Famous"stories and have been able to showcase different Hatters for the amazing women that they are. We will continue to do so through 2012, so please continue to submit those stories to Stories@redhatsociety.com.

This year, Hatquarters began featuring a Queen of the Month on the Red Hat Society's Facebook Page. Tomorrow we will highlight a new Queen, so be sure to "LIKE" the page to learn more about this month's wonderful Hatter.

Finally, this week the Red Hat Society is going to participate in "National Wear Red Day" to bring about awareness of the dangers of Heart Disease to Hatters around the world. We value every Hatter, and because Heart Disease is the number one killer of women, we believe it is important that women know the 5 signs of a heart and the ways they can reduce their risk. She's A Star!!

Wanda, Queen of the Vivacious Vineyard known as the Concord Grapette Chapter (Arkansas, United States) is a natural celebrity. She submitted her story to Hatquarters as part of the Red Hat Society's on-going "I'm Famous" segment, and we just had to share it!

"My life, consisting of family, friends, church and community, has always been filled with a lot of excitement.  When I found The Red Hat Society eight years ago it brought even more excitement and activity into my life.

In Arkansas the local Red Hat Chapters hold an annual Ms. Arkansas Red Hat Pageant. In 2006
I won the title and enjoyed a full year of traveling to Chapters across the state to attend their local events and parades.  This allowed me to meet many, many Hatters all over the state and region where I made life-long friendships.  Not only do I attend several events sponsored by other Chapters within the state but each year I also attend at least one ‘out of state’ event. I am so happy that we have email and Facebook to help me keep in contact with the many friends I have made at these events."

Queen of the Vivacious Vineyard and her Chapterettes volunteer at a local nursing home to bring cheer to the ladies, and they participate in answering phones for the Jerry Lewis MS Telethon each year.

"The Concord Grapettes are well known across the state and I feel I have helped with that notoriety," she said. "I have always been 'a little outside of the box.' So being a Red Hatter has added even more of that spirit into my life."

Wanda is also an excellent designer (as you can see from her photos). She has her own clothing collection, and she received recognition as one of the top three Hatters in costume at the 2011 Big Easy Bash International Convention. Her design skills don't stop at wardrobe though!  Her Coca Cola winter wonderland themed home has brought her quite a bit of notoriety as well! Wanda's home is like a beautiful winter museum that houses a collection of Coca Cola memorabilia that Wanda has accumulated over 20 years and stays decorated year-round. Each year local second graders tour her home for an annual Coca Cola and Christmas tour, and Wanda bakes 600 Coca Cola bottle shaped cookies for the children who also get to meet Santa (a tradition that started with her grandson).  This past year her home was featured on the Oprah Winfrey Network show "Home Takeover with Simon and Tomas," and it received a kitchen and dining room makeover.

"What do you think? Am I famous or what??" Absolutely Queen Wanda! What a wonderful list of accomplishments, and these pictures are FABULOUS!! Thank you for sharing them!

"I'm Famous"

To get in the spirit of the 2012 RHS theme: "The Stars Among Us," the Red Hat Society has asked Members to share with us reasons they are famous so we can place them in the spotlight for being so amazing. We have received so many wonderful submissions at Hatquarters and we will continue to share them throughout the year in our Blog, on the Friday Broadcast, and other publications, including Inspiring Hatters and Red Hatter Matters. If you have a story you would like to share, be sure to submit it to Stories@redhatsociety.com with the title "I'm Famous." Send plenty of pictures as well!

Get Ready for American Heart Month with the Red Hat Society and Hot In Cleveland

By Nancy Brown
Chief Executive Officer of the American Heart Association

February, which is American Heart Month, is just a few weeks away. Did you know more women die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined? Unfortunately, heart disease is often silent, hidden and misunderstood. That’s why the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women® movement is asking women to participate in the 9th Annual National Wear Red Day on Friday, February 3, 2012, to make ending heart disease a reality.

Red Hatters can wear red in support of the cause, learn more about their personal risk of heart disease, get involved with local events and register for a free red dress pin at GoRedForWomen.org or Facebook.com/GoRed.

Get Ready for National Wear Red Day with the Red Hatters and Hot In Cleveland

On the heels of the highly successful PSA featuring the Hot in Cleveland cast, TV Land continues their support of Go Red For Women with a Hot In Cleveland episode featuring a Go Red For Women/heart disease-related story line set to air on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. CT/7 p.m. PT!  In honor of Betty White's 90th Birthday on January 17th, the show will feature a parallel birthday mention of Betty's character, Elka.
What specifically is this parallel birthday mention mean? Is Elka turning 90 too?

In addition, we are so excited that The Red Hat Society, one of Go Red For Women’s strategic alliances, is hosting a Facebook Chat prior to the episode to drive excitement! The chat will take place on Red Hat Society’s Facebook Page at 6:30 PST, 8:30SCST, 9:30EST before the show. Go Red For Women’s National Facebook Page will be supporting the 30-minute chat, and Dr. Malissa Wood, a Go Red For Women physician spokesperson, also will be answering heart healthy questions live. Check out the Red Hatters’ Facebook Chat before the show to kick off a fun evening of heart health and laughs!

RHS in London

Sharon Malecki, Duchess of Shop-A-Lot of the Ramblin' Roses (Maryland, United States) and six Chapterettes signed on for the Red Hat Society's London New Year's Day Parade extravaganza. When Hatquarters called to chat with Duchess Shop-A-Lot about her recent trip, she had just gotten in the bath, but she jumped at the opportunity to chat about her trip (despite our insistence that we could call back at a better time). Fifteen minutes later we had this cute story to share, and about ten minutes after that Sharon sent over these fun pictures to accompany it.

This was Duchess Shop-A-Lot's first trip out of the United States and she couldn't have been in better company. Two of the Sisters had already participated in this event in previous years, and one had lived in England for a period of time.

Marilyn shared that she is huge fan of Henry VIII, and her tours of Windsor Castle and St. George's Chapel were among her favorite activities of the week. She had also caught wind of a group of Hatters who were talking about taking a tour of Buckingham Palace on the Queens & Members Board on the Red Hat Society's Website, and she jumped in the conversation in just enough time to take the last spot in the tour. "We walked up the steps where Prince William and Kate walked after they were married, and we saw the state room and the throne room." After the tour, the ladies joined the other Hatters on the trip to see the UK production of the world-renowned musical "Wicked".

As for The Red Hat Society's participation in London's New Year's Day Parade, Sharon said: "We were well baptized that day with the rain." She was among the Hatters making their way down the parade route waving at on-lookers on a double-decker tour bus, and  she and her friends stayed on the top of the bus, despite the fact that they were getting soaked by the rain and standing in about five inches of water. (A little rain can't get us Hatters down!) As luck would have it, the double-decker broke down about half way down the parade route, and the ladies received a ride back to their hotels in a police van. (Imagine that! A police van filled with Hatters!) The ladies made it back to their hotel in good spirits and just in time for tea!

Marilyn was giggling as she shared her story with us, and she was thankful for being inspired by her Sisters and the Society to participate in this special event. "Was it perfect? No. Was it worth it? Yes!," Marilyn said.

Thank you so much for sharing that wonderful story with us Sharon! We are so excited that you went!!

Queen Diva Janet and Big Girl

Queen Diva Janet, visited Hatquarters yesterday, and boy was she a bundle of laughs and fun! She was eager to chat with all of the gals at Hatquarters and excitedly shared this photo and cute story about her sock monkey "Big Girl" with us. Big Girl was a gift to her from fellow Hatter Jeanne Kenyon whom she had met up with for a day of fun in Los Angeles. Queen Diva Janet had taken a train and Dash to get to the city that day, so you can imagine the fun looks she got as she carried Big Girl on her trip home. "The woman at the bus stop just couldn't stop staring," Janet said.

Queen Diva had so much fun carrying Big Girl around that day that she now takes her everywhere! She has so much fun riding with her in her car, especially when she puts her in the front seat. "People driving by always do a double-take," Janet said. "Never in my life did I think that at my age, I would be buying clothes for and having so much fun with a sock monkey!"

How fun Queen Diva Janet, and what a wonderful gift!! Do you have a sock monkey story that you would like to share? Please submit it to Stories@redhatsociety.com, and post any pictures on the Red Hat Society Facebook Fan Page.

Texas Traveler Queen Susie Visits Hatquarters

It was just another day at Hatquarters, when Queen Susie of The Red Hat Texas Travelers (Texas, United States) wandered into the Hat-Tastic lobby with Queen Mum Christine of the Delectable Dahlias Chapter (California, United States).

Queen Mum Christine had visited Hatquarters a few times before, but this was Queen Susie’s first visit, and Christine wanted to make sure the spotlight was on her. Queen Susie was beaming as she toured Hatquarters. Her red cowboy hat was covered in bling, her purple shirt read “Don’t Mess with Texas Women”, and the twinkle in her eye competed with the bling on her arms neck and fingers! She proudly held her Sock Monkey, Prissy Too, in her right arm, and a gorgeous red Michael Kors purse around her left arm. “It was a Christmas gift from my son and his girlfriend,” she said. “They told me he’s a pretty popular designer, but I don’t know much about that stuff.”

Queen Susie was sweet as pie as she sat and shared stories of her travels with her Sisters in her big red caravan. Recently, she and her Chapterettes attended the Big Easy Bash in New Orleans, and they took their own trip to Louisiana and met with several Sisters including Hatter of the Year, Queen Too Too.

Prissy Too, a gift from Queen Too Too, rested on Queen Susie’s lap while she talked. She was dressed in her New Year’s Outfit: a black and red dress with red glitter shoes, a red boa and, of course, a red hat with red and purple feathers; Just ONE of her many outfits. “I wish I could bring all of her clothes, but I don’t have room,” she said. Hatquarters staff joked that Prissy Too was going to have to get a carry bag all her own!

If you would like to learn more about the significance of the sock monkey to the Sisterhood, click here.

The ladies only stayed for about an hour, but they didn’t leave without first doing a quick fashion shoot, which will be featured in an upcoming blog. Be sure to look out for that! Thank you so much for taking the time to visit ladies! It was a lovely meeting you!
