A Little Taste of Grandma's Brag Board

September is host to National Grandparents' Day. Last month, The Red Hat Society asked Hatters to share with us some of their favorite moments with their grandchildren to be featured in the upcoming issue of Red Hatter Matters in a new section called "Grandma's Brag Board." Here is a sneak preview of a few of the responses we received!

"Recently I was babysitting my 5 yr. old granddaughter, Rylee, and one of my Red Hat Chapters was meeting for lunch that day. So I ask permission to bring Rylee along. Rylee had always loved trying on my Red Hat clothes and hats since she the moment she could talk. Before we got to the Ranch where we were dining, Rylee kept talking about the ladies she knew, getting some of the names mixed up with my other Chapter. When we joined the others, I introduced Rylee to our Queen. She promptly stood up and sang out, 'Queen Jean,' and for days afterwards she talked about Queen Jean. When her parents ask her who she was talking about, Rylee said, 'Oh! You know, that's mine and Emama's Queen.' We think Rylee will skip Pink Hats and go right to Red Hatting at the ripe ole age of 5." - Dianne, Belles of the 'Boro Chapter (Georgia, United States)

"Most of the QMBers know about my lovable 17 year-old grandson, Nicholas. Nicholas is under Hospice care as we speak due to having a rare brain disease called Batten. He is also a diabetic and has been on the insulin pump for ten years. Every time I have to do his insulin pump, I always tell him that Mom and Dad can do this quicker than Grandma, and he always tells me, 'That's okay Grandma, you're old,' I laugh and tell him  'I will be your old grandma any time.'  Nicholas' brain development has decreased to the age of an 18 month old child, and he is completely blind, but every time he hears my voice, he has a big smile for me and says 'grandma again.'  He is the bravest child I have ever met, and he is my Hero."- Myrna of the Red Hot and Devilish Chapter (Nevada, United States)

"When I want to get a kiss and a hug from my grandchildren, I'll ask for some 'sugar' and they usually give me a bear hug and a kiss on the cheek.
When my granddaughter Lauren was about 4 years old, I asked her for some 'sugar' and she said 'Uh,uh!'
So I then asked her where Grandma Pat would get her 'sugar' from and she quickly replied 'From the grocery store.'"-
Pat of the Sassy Southern Sisters Chapter (Georgia, United States)

Know The Symptoms

Monday, Actress and Comedian, Rosie O'Donnell, revealed that she recently suffered a heart attack known as the "Widow Maker." Like many women, Rosie did not know the symptoms of a heart attack, and even after she looked them up on the Internet, she was completely in denial of what she was experiencing.

On her blog, she shared:

                            I did not call 911
50% of women having heart attacks never call 911
200,000 women die of heart attacks
every year in the US

by some miracle i was not one of them
the next day i went to a cardiologist

As one of the largest women's social organizations in the world, The Red Hat Society encourages its Members to protect their hearts by learning the facts about heart disease. That is why we support the American Heart Association's endeavors to educate women about the symptoms of a heart attack and the preventative measures that can be taken to ensure that they do not become victims. Although this is the leading killer of women in the United States, this is a disease that knows no boundaries and could just as easily affect any one of the International Sisters.

Whether you are a Supporting Member of the Red Hat Society or a frequent visitor on our blog, please take a moment to educate yourself about the symptoms of a heart attack. We are happy that Rosie is a survivor, and we hope that her story will inspire you to learn more about the dangers of heart disease. In a Sisterhood that's all about fun and friendship, we want you to be healthy so you can play with us for many years to come!

Nation Wear Red Day is a special day organized by the American Heart Association to bring awareness to the dangers of heart disease. February 1, 2013 is the 10th Anniversary of this movement, and The Red Hat Society will participate by encouraging Hatters around the world to wear red and go out and play.

Would you like get involved with The Red Hat Society and National Wear Red Day? We would love to have you!

Game Time!

When was the last time you played a good game of Truth or Dare? It may have been so long ago that you can't remember, but we're willing to bet that some of the fun and often exciting events that occurred during your previous bouts with this game are still unforgettable.

Earlier this year, Queen of deVINE, Linda, suggested that Hatquarters revive this game for Hatters to use in their Chapter outing, and we thought that was a great idea! New to the Fun Stuff Tab of the RHS website is the RHS Tattle Game. Hatters have the option of either printing the templated questions and dares, or they can print the blank cards and write questions and dares that might be more relevant to their Chapters.

This game is the perfect Chapter Activity, and will surely lead to loads of giggles and fun. After all, The Red Hat Society is all about "Bringing The Giggles Back!"

Directions for the game:
Cut out the different cards and place them face down on the table, or into a bowl. Mix them up, and each player chooses a card. They are then to either share or do what is written. The RHS has provided you with empty cards as well so that you can add to your own fun! Enjoy!

Access to RHS downloadbles is an exclusive benefit to Supporting Members of the Red Hat Society. If you would like to learn how you can bring the giggles back to your life by becoming a Member of the Red Hat Society, simply visit our website. We can't wait to get to know you!

Scarlet Sparkles and A Spoon Full Of Sugar

When it comes to Sisters in need, Hatters are the best at coming together and showering them with Scarlet Sparkles and Red Hat Hugs!

Recently, Queen Kaye, of the Durham Red Hot Chicks (Ontario, Canada) sent a Thank You card to the Red Hat Society in appreciation of the numerous cards, well wishes and prayers she received after she was in a car accident a few months ago. Because we know this was a joint effort, we wanted to share her words of appreciation with you!

“Many, many of these wishes came from my Red Hat Sisters near and far, known and unknown, and they have given me such strength and encouragement to deal with my injuries,” Queen Kaye said.
Although Queen Kaye suffered from a broken neck as a result of the accident, miraculously, she was able to undergo a surgical procedure to stabilize her it, and she wore a neck brace to allow it to heal properly.
“I know this would not have been possible without my Red Hat Family,” she said.

One day, when Queen Kaye was feeling particularly down on herself, she received an unexpected card in the mail, which contained a “Spoonful of Sugar” and plenty of well wishes for a speedy recovery from the Hatquarters team.

“What timing,” Kaye said. “I am so proud to be Queen of the Durham Red Hot Chicks of Ontario Canada!”
In true Red Hat Fashion, Queen Kaye included photos of herself at an RHS function smiling from ear to ear with her neck brace wrapped in a beautifully vibrant red scarf. There really is nothing we Hatters can’t find a way to accessorize!

A DIY Red Hat Band

We love when Red Hat Society Members share their fun crafts ideas with us! At our 2012 Golden Age of Glamour International Convention, Marilyn, an RHS Ambassador and Queen, was strutting her stuff in her Red Hat Band, which she made herself. When we asked her how she made it, she took the time to show us so we could share it here with you. Isn't it adorable? Keep reading to learn how you can make this hat for yourself!

What You Need:
-A Large Drink Straw
-Eyelash Yarn (color of your choice)
-Hair Pin

How To Assemble:
Step 1:Take your elastic and pull it through the straw and tape down about an inch-and-a-half of elastic on one side.
Step 2: Let the remaining elastic run out to be the length of the hat band that you would like.
Step 3: Use a hair clip as a weight to hold it steady.
Step 4: Take your eyelash yarn and loosely wrap it around the straw and then tie it into a knot.
Step 5: Continue wrapping the yarn around the straw in the same circular motion throughout the length of the elastic that was cut.
Step 6: Once you have completed wrapping, carefully cut the tape off the end of the straw.
Step 7: Tie the two ends of the elastic together. Cut the excess elastic.
Step 8: Place band on top of your head and wear it as a hat or add it as an accessory to your favorite hat!

This hat can also become a fabulous lei, a boa depending on the length of the elastic that you use, a
halo, or a bracelet.

Do you have an idea that you would like to feature on Red Hat Chat? Simply send us your photos and directions to Stories@redhatsociety.com, and title the email "Craft Idea." We love to receive and share new ideas with the Sisterhood.
