The Legacy Hat Challenge

Hatters are incredibly crafty! ! It’s always fun to see the how RHS Queens and Members can take something and just make it their own! This  week, we would like to propose a Legacy Hat Challenge.

If you received a Legacy Hat in your Membership Kit and have decorated it, then we want to see pictures of your creation! The best thing about this hat is its versatility! Some Hatters call it the floppy hat, because the brim is wide, and it tends to flop down. Others call it the travel hat, because it can fit so easily in suitcases when traveling! For Pink Hatters, this hat is a symbolic gift meant to be kept in anticipation of their magical 50th Birthday.

Queen Lynette of the Strawberry Tarts (Washington, United States) submitted a few fun suggestions that you might want to try. We can't wait to see what you come up with. We will also post our own spruced up Legacy Hat on Red Hat Chat next week!

Tips from Queen Lynette:

"If you simply remove a couple of the rows (between 2 and 3 yards of ribbon) you'll be amazed at the different look you have. Add a bow here, some feathers there, pins for a jaunty look, or hatbands with everything on them. The possibilities are endless when you find the right width. Don't forget this is one of the easiest hats to pack. With all the conventions coming up, just add the embellishments and you are set. Now get those creative juices flowing!"

Extra strength starch spray works wonders too!

Once you have decorated your Legacy Hat, please feel free to share your photos and ideas with us! You can email them to or post them on the
Red Hat Society's Facebook Page. If you are a Member, and no longer have your Legacy Hat, you can purchase one for $10 by clicking here. Let's see what we come up with!

Here are some fun items you might want to use! The pins can be purchased at the RHS Store:

  1. When did the hats go out to members?

    1. The Hats come in the new member kits. If you were a returning member you received a pin.
